The Bobath Concept is a therapeutic approach for the assessment and treatment of people with disorders of function, movement, and postural control caused by damage to the central nervous system. Developed by Berta and Karel Bobath in the 1940s, it is a holistic method focused on improving the patient’s quality of life and independence.
This approach not only applies to children with cerebral palsy, but has also evolved to treat adults who have suffered strokes, traumatic brain injuries, or multiple sclerosis, among other neurological conditions. Through facilitation of movements and inhibition of abnormal patterns, Bobath therapy aims to restore functional motor control.
Treatment is an active and continuous problem-solving process, where the therapist guides the patient through the relearning of the most physiological and efficient movements possible. Brain neuroplasticity is the main foundation of this method.
